Frank Keller, poliziotto di New York con 20 anni di carriera, divorziato dalla moglie Denise che si è rifatta una vita con un collega di Frank, si sente solo ed insoddisfatto e potrebbe andarsene in pensione. Ma le indagini sull'assassinio di tre uomini uccisi allo stesso modo lo inducono a buttarsi a capofitto nel lavoro, insieme al collega Sherman. Le tre vittime erano individui soli che, tramite annunci su un giornale per cuori solitari, avevano trovato compagnia; tutti sono stati trovati nudi sul letto con un colpo di pistola alla testa mentre un disco romantico, "Sea of Love" continuava a suonare. Si sospetta di una donna che potrebbe aver fatto fuori i tre malcapitati per motivi noti solo a lei. I due poliziotti iniziano ad incontrare diverse donne dopo un annuncio sullo stesso giornale delle vittime e su tutte si fanno ricerche: una in particolare, Helen, sembra rispondere alle caratteristiche della colpevole. Proprio di lei però si invaghisce Frank, il quale si vede diviso fra il senso del dovere e l'amore.
