Trama:Daniel Plainview, cercatore di petrolio, giunge in una piccola cittadina dell'Ovest degli Stati Uniti nel cui sottosuolo sono presenti vastissimi giacimenti di oro nero. Mentre Plainview diviene sempre più ricco grazie ai trivellazioni, la città ne soffre, e lo stesso Daniel diviene vittima dell'avidità al punto di rovinare il rapporto con il figlio. Un giovane predicatore che si presenta come profeta, Eli, cerca di opporsi allo strapotere di Daniel, ma presto diviene anche lui vittima del potere che esercita sui suoi seguaci. Tratto da un romanzo del 1926 di Upton Sinclair.
