Qualche anno dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, la giovane Florence - ossessionata dalla morte del fidanzato - si è specializzata nello studio dei fenomeni paranormali. La donna, ricorrendo a spiegazioni razionali e metodiche, sostiene che il mondo dei morti non può entrare in contatto con quello dei vivi. Sarà costretta a rivedere le sue certezze nel momento in cui dovrà indagare su fantasma apparso sulle foto di un ragazzo, morto qualche tempo prima, e che sta seminando il panico tra genitori e studenti di un prestigioso college immerso nella tetra campagna inglese.
