In un'Inghilterra alternativa distopica, dove la scienza medica ha fatto enormi progressi, Kathy, Ruth e Tommy sono tre bambini che crescono nel collegio di Hailsham, del tutto isolato dal mondo, in un clima particolare. A sedici anni, completati gli studi, i tre ragazzi lasciano Hailsham per andare nei "Cottages" a completare la loro educazione per diventare prima "assistenti" e poi "donatori"; questo infatti è il loro destino sin dalla nascita: sono dei cloni umani, i cui organi sono destinati ad essere espiantati.
