In California, il giovane scienziato Bruce Banner accusa qualche problema di controllo dell'ira. Dietro la sua vita di brillante e apprezzato ricercatore nel campo dell'ingegneria genetica si nasconde un passato doloroso e mai del tutto dimenticato. Betty Ross, sua collega, era fidanzata con lui ma ora non sa come mandare avanti un rapporto fin troppo passivo. Così non può fare nulla quando Bruce dà il via ad uno dei suoi esperimenti scientifici. Una svista produce una situazione esplosiva. Con un gesto eroico Bruce salva una vita umana ma il suo corpo assorbe una dose letale di radiazioni gamma. Arrivano attacchi di nausea e momenti di perdita di coscienza. Bruce avverte una strana presenza dentro di sé, un estraneo che in certi momenti ha la prevalenza e si sostituisce a lui. Quando una enorme creatura, brutale e violenta, esce dal laboratorio di Bruce dopo averlo distrutto, l'esercito è chiamato ad intervenire al comando del generale Ross, padre di Betty, e con la consulenza di Glenn Talbot, scienziato rivale di Bruce.
