Dopo aver suonato con Yes e King Crimson, il batterista Bill Bruford fece un grande passo verso il jazz-rock e la fusione con l'istituzione del suo gruppo, chiamato semplicemente Bruford, alla fine degli anni '70. Ha presentato la band, presentando una formazione di base su batteria e percussioni (incluso vibrafono) con il tastierista Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health), il chitarrista Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine, Gong, Tony Williams) e il bassista Jeff Berlin, in Feels Good to Me, che comprendeva anche apparizioni della cantante Annette Peacock, del flügelhornist Kenny Wheeler e del chitarrista John Goodsall (Brand X). Registrato ai Trident Studios di Londra nel 1977 (stesso luogo e anno in cui il batterista e il suo chitarrista della band Bruford Holdsworth registrarono il disco di debutto del supergruppo prog rock UK con John Wetton e Eddie Jobson) e pubblicarono le edizioni EG l'anno successivo, Feels Good per me fu sia il primo album solista di Bill Bruford che la registrazione di debutto della band di Bruford, che pubblicò un seguito, One of a Kind, nel 1979 (registrato al Trident nel gennaio di quell'anno). One of a Kind presentava una formazione di quartetti del batterista / leader, Stewart, Holdsworth e Berlino, ma Holdsworth lasciò la band nella primavera del 1979, per essere sostituito dallo "sconosciuto" John Clark (il cui modo di esprimersi e il tono si sarebbero rivelati essere straordinariamente simile a quello di Holdsworth) per il Gradually Going Tornado degli anni '80, noto anche per il bassista Berlin che esce con la voce. Una trasmissione radiofonica in diretta a New York del 1979 della band Bruford (anche con Clark alla chitarra) vide il rilascio di The Bruford Tapes nel 1980, ma il gruppo si sciolse entro settembre dello stesso anno, a quanto pare a causa delle pressioni della direzione di Editions EG, che erano meno che soddisfatti della situazione finanziaria della band. L'anno seguente, Bill Bruford si unì alla nuova versione di King Crimson con Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew e Tony Levin. Il lavoro del batterista con la sua omonima band sarebbe riapparso su disco nel 1986, tuttavia, occupando una parte del leone della compilation Master Strokes: 1978-1985. A metà degli anni '80 Bill Bruford iniziò a dirigere un altro gruppo, Earthworks, che si mosse ancora più fortemente in una direzione jazzistica, presentando in anteprima un album omonimo nel 1987.
