Trama:Captain Phillips - Attacco in mare aperto è la disamina a diversi livelli del dirottamento della nave porta container U.S.A. Alabama da parte di una banda di pirati Somali avvenuto nel 2009. Il film è allo stesso tempo un thriller ad alta tensione ed un ritratto della miriade di effetti collaterali della globalizzazione. La storia è incentrata in particolare sulla relazione tra il Comandante della Alabama, il Capitano Richard Phillips, e la sua controparte somala, Muse.
